Romantic serendipity strikes twice for a passionate young couple but brings unforeseen complications in The Accidental Gangster and the Mistaken Courtesan, director Yeo Gyoon-dong's lavish, romantic crime drama. The time and place: Eighteenth Century Korea. In the year 1724 and the reign of the Joseon Dynasty, Chung-doong (Lee Jung-jae) grows instantly smitten with the beautiful gisaeng (Korean singer-dancer) Seol-ji (Kim Ok-bin), whom he meets amid a brawl in an ancient market. Although the lovers spend an unforgettable night together, they drift apart. But fate reunites them when Chung-doong rediscovers Seol-ji in a bar. Unfortunately, the reunion is bittersweet and comes with unexpected strings, with the young woman now tied to a shady manager, Man-deuk (Kim Suk-hoon), a fixture in the local criminal underworld. Though Chung-Doong never planned to enter a life of crime, he finds himself inexorably drawn into a web of duplicity and lawbreaking when he accidentally knocks off the head of the local Jjak-gwi gang - and his razor-sharp fighting skills enable him to take the boss's place. His confidence brimming, Chung-Doong now concocts a plan to steal Seol-ji from the clutches of Man-deuk by causing a messy distraction amid a meeting of gang bosses in a local bar - which in turn sets the stage for Man-deuk's elaborate revenge against the Jjak-gwis.
